As of 2011, Ashmore has a population of more than 11,000 people. Ashmore gets its name from a locality or a family property in England. Ashmore used to be a local thoroughfare where residents travel from Benowa Road to Nerang Road. The suburb of Ashmore was officially perpetuated in 1976 when a housing estate was developed in the area called Ashmore Village.
The residents of Ashmore often shop near the Southport-Nerang Road. The area features the Ashmore City Shopping centre, as well as other large stores such as Spotlight and Anaconda. Ashmore also has a Hungry Jack's, Pizza Hut, and Red Rooster just opposite Ashmore Plaza.
Pre-clearing, the vegetation in Ashmore included areas with a substantial amount of blackbutt tall open forest on lowland metamorphosed sediments. Now considered as endangered, this ecosystem is being cleared for the agriculture and housing purposes.
The area where Royal Pines resort now stands was once an established Eucaliptus tereticornis forest with some wetlands, and patches of rainforest. Several types of birds like the Jabiru, the magpie geese and other varieties call these wetlands home which stretched from Nerang to near Burleigh Heads along the floodplain of the Nerang River Valley and Mudgeereebah and Bonogin Creeks. This ecosystem was akin to Kakadu with lagoons of lilypads, swamp rainforest and gnarled old paperbark forest filled with palms. In the 1980s prior to the development of Royal Pines resort, farmland with remnant degraded wetlands and some forest remained, and jabiru, spoonbills, magpie geese and a variety of other birds could be seen there. Development in recent decades has led to the loss of most remnant natural vegetation.
