What You Should Know About Termites.

There are hundreds of different termite species in Australia, however, most of these do not pose a threat to humans and their homes. The few species that do pose a threat, cause more damage to houses than fires, floods, and storms do annually. There are three categories of termites, Subterranean Termites, Drywood Termites, and Dampwood Termites.

However, the Subterranean Termites are the most destructive termite species in Australia as they pose the most threat to timber structures. The most common species of termite in Australia are the Coptotermes, Schedorhinotermes, Nasutitermes, Microcerotermes and Heterotermes. The most destructive of them all is Coptotermes.

Dampwood Termites

These generally live in damp rotting logs or pockets in dead or living trees.

Drywood Termites

They obtain water from the wood in which they live and have no contact whatsoever with soil or with any other source of moisture.

Subterranean Termites

These are the most common termites and require contact with the soil and are highly destructive timber pests, causing major structural damage to domestic and commercial buildings.
